Honoring a Musical Legend

Guwahati, Sept 13:  On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the birth centenary of the esteemed Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika, emphasizing how his enduring melodies continue to foster unity across the nation and inspire future generations. Speaking at the event held in Khanapara, Guwahati, Modi highlighted that Hazarika’s work epitomizes the ethos of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.'

“Though Bhupen da is no longer with us, his music continues to invigorate the populace. His songs resonate with the essence of Indian culture and serve as a unifying force. During times of unrest in the Northeast, Hazarika’s voice championed peace and solidarity,” the Prime Minister remarked.

Modi noted that awarding the Bharat Ratna to Hazarika is a recognition not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast region. During the event, he also unveiled a book celebrating the maestro's life and a commemorative coin valued at Rs. 100.

Stressing the importance of culture in nation-building, Modi asserted that India's progress is intertwined with the advancement of the Northeast. “As we enhance cultural ties, the nation is becoming more aware of the region's rich history and heritage. I consistently promote the Assamese gamosa and encourage everyone to support local initiatives,” he stated.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude for Modi's attendance, stating it has mended a long-standing emotional gap for the Assamese community. “When Bhupen da passed away in 2011, there was a desire for the then Prime Minister to pay his respects, which did not happen. Today, Modi ji’s presence at these centenary celebrations acknowledges the sentiments of our people,” Sarma commented.

The Chief Minister reminisced about how Hazarika’s music conveyed messages of social equality, brotherhood, and nationalism. He also expressed appreciation to the BJP-led central government for honoring the 'Bard of Brahmaputra' through various tributes, including the Bharat Ratna, naming the Dhola-Sadiya bridge in his honor, and issuing the commemorative coin.
